About Selous River Camp
Your accommodation can be part of what makes your safari unforgettable.
From the first scents of earthy morning air to the bushbaby calls and soft owl hoots that drift into camp after dark, there’s a satisfying natural rhythm to a day at Selous River Camp.
Deep at night, if you’re lucky, you may hear the distant whoop of a hyena, the rasping call of a leopard or the rumbled greetings of elephants. Most often though, you’ll find you sleep peacefully, intoxicated by fresh air and adventure. Soon after waking, you’ll head out into the wilderness, excited to discover what the day will bring. Perhaps you’ll find yourself watching giraffes bend elegantly to sip from a lake, spot a spotted hyena sleepily emerging from its den, or witness the early adventures of the youngest, cutest members of a mighty lion pride.
Selous River Camp is a small safari camp nestled within woodland overlooking the magnificent Rufiji River, on the border of the Nyerere National Park - part of the vast Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania.
Relax between safaris with a good book, a frosted beer or glass of wine and a view to write home about.
Down-to-earth and comfortable. Slow living.
You’ll find the atmosphere in camp is intimate and friendly, and the service personal and professional. Anyone who’s cautious about staying in the wilderness will be relieved to discover we aim to put our guests at ease by focusing on creature comforts: ice cold drinks, delicious dining, clean and private bathrooms and comfortable beds, for starters.
The camp is built using as many locally-sourced, sustainable materials as possible and blends into the natural environment, minimising disturbance to wildlife and their habitats. Supporting the local community is a key principle, and in addition to donating to and being involved in development projects in the local village of Mloka, our in-camp training program means that many of our team came to the camp unskilled - our head chef now creates anything from lasagne with fresh handmade pasta to lemon meringue pie (he also makes an epic chocolate cake - don’t say we didn’t warn you!).
Our safaris are real, honest experiences of the Selous. Indulgent adventures which are unhurried and truly off the beaten path.
We’re passionate about sharing authentic experiences, away from crowds and tourist traps … and our safaris reflect that. We’re all about doing things with you in mind - getting the very most out of the experience while recognising budget to get the best value for money. Ask us about our favourite things to do to make the most of your Selous safari experience or take a look at our safaris to see how we do things differently. On safari, nothing arrives to order, but often it’s better than you expect!
The camp's location is convenient. As the closest camp to the park, your travel time from camp to park gate is a matter of moments.
The views from camp of the Rufiji River with its hippos are stunning, with spectacular and often dramatic sunsets over the river in the evenings, and beautiful, gentle golden light illuminating the water and opposite bank in the mornings. Wildlife wander out of the park freely to visit the camp, which means you could enjoy the company of elephants during your breakfast or watch monkeys’ antics in the trees overhead while lounging in the pool. The surrounding forest helps to keep the camp cool during the heat of the day, and by staying outside the park, you save money on Nyerere National Park fees (only paying them when you enter the park for safaris).
